SHALFLEET SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Foundation Stage

The reception class is the final year of the foundation stage.  We follow six areas of learning

The children develop in these areas through engaging in activities planned by adults, but also those which they initiate themselves.  Through play based activities, children enjoy and gain confidence in basis skills of Literacy and Numeracy, develop interest in the world around them, are happy to experiment in creative skills and increase control of their movement. and increase control of their movement.  In all areas children are encouraged in a positive way to view themselves and others, learn to express their emotions and ideas and become confident to try new activities.  We aim to work with each child's individual interests and to provide opportunities to learn from a wide range of experiences.

Year 1 - Year 4

We aim to provide a high quality education for all our children.  We do this by providing a carefully balanced curriculum which:-

We are flexible in our structure of classes to ensure that work the children are given is always at the appropriate level for each of them.  We teach many of the subjects through a creative programme of challenging topics, following the Isle of Wight syllabus for Religious Education and all the children taking part in a planned programme of Drugs Education as part of their science curriculum.

The children also follow an age appropriate sex education syllabus.  We aim to work here within the framework of a loving, caring family as well as within our values as a Church of England School.  However, parents are entitled to withdraw their child from any aspect of this programme.

Complaints about the Curriculum

The Authority has drawn up a procedure, as required by the Education Reform Act 1988, to deal with any complaints by parents or others about the implementation of the National Curriculum and religious worship in schools or other matters concerned with the curriculum responsibilities of schools or the Authority. A copy of the procedure is available in schools (and at the Education Dept., County Hall and in Public Libraries).
